Summit for Danny - Local 2009

On May 23, 1995, Bob Bryant's son, Danny died of a drug overdose.  Like many other parents who have suffered the loss of a child to alcohol and other drugs, Bob was determined to turn his tragedy into hope for others by raising funds to create an adolescent treatment center.

In 1999, Bob and Patty Bryant climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in an effort to raise funds to create a treatment program for adolescents in Santa Barbara.  This event was named the “Summit for Danny.”  In 2000, the Bryants lead a team of community leaders on a first ascent of an unnamed mountain in the Canadian Arctic.  The funds raised from these two climbs enabled the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse to open the Daniel Bryant Youth and Family Treatment Center on March 22, 2001.   Since the opening of the Center (which to date has served over 1,800 local teens and their families), the Bryants and community members have traveled to Peru, Ecuador, Bhutan, and Patagonia to raise support for the cause.  International climbs occur annually and all members of the community are welcome and encouraged to participate.

In October of 2001, the Summit for Danny effort went local and the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse started hosting annual community climbs to allow the entire Santa Barbara Community to participate.  Our 9th Annual Summit for Danny Community Climb will take place on Saturday, October 24, 2009 and will raise much-needed scholarships for teens to receive substance abuse treatment.  For more information on how to register for this year's climb, go to www.summitfordanny.org.  Whether or not you are able to join us for our day of hiking and fun on October 24th, we hope that you will join us in our fundraising effort to support the Daniel Bryant Youth and Family Treatment Center, as we seek to provide help for every teen who needs it.
